Vilelmini Sosoni, Assistant Professor at the Department of Foreign Language and Interpreting (Ionian University), and John O’Shea, Director at JurTrans and member of the FIT Europe Board, published an article on the Taylor and Francis Journal regarding the translation of Property Law terms. In the article, the two PEM members make a comparison between notarial deeds in Greek and their English translation.
In particular, a corpus-driven methodology was used and a parallel corpus consisting of 20 notarial deeds in Greek and their translation into English was analysed in order to determine how terms, and the underlying concepts, are handled by professional legal translators.
Although the concept of property underlies property law in all systems, there are vast differences in the way it is perceived and interpreted. The analysis is based on Šarčević’s categories of equivalence and on her classification of translation strategies.
